Span-K 600mg Tab 200
An aid in the treatment of potassium deficiency (hypokalaemia)
COMPOSITION:
Potassium (as Gluconate) 78mg (2mEq)
ACTIONS:
Potassium, the most abundant intracellular cation in the body, is responsible for normal functioning of a number of vital cellular processes, especially maintenance of normal transmembrane potential. Depletion of potassium stores may induce a wide variety of abnormalities in cats, including muscle weakness, renal dysfunction, cardiac dysfunction, weight loss and anaemia.
Hypokalaemia (chronic potassium depletion), a result of inadequate dietary potassium intake relative to excessive urinary potassium losses, has been shown to be significantly associated
with chronic renal failure, hepatic disease, systemic infectious diseases, and neuromuscular or CNS disease.
In potassium supplementation therapy, the use of the gluconate salt is important as clinical pathology results indicate that potassium chloride will cause a hyperchloraemia and metabolic acidosis. Clinical impressions have consistently shown a significantly better improvement with the gluconate over inorganic salts.
INDICATIONS:
An aid in the treatment of potassium deficiency (hypokalaemia) in cats.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Administration to animals with high potassium levels, in the oliguric stage of acute renal failure, or with adrenocortical insufficiency, acidosis or urethral obstruction.
PRECAUTIONS:
Use with caution in the presence of cardiac disease. To be used by or under the supervision of a registered veterinary surgeon.
DISPOSAL:
Dispose of empty container by wrapping with paper and putting in garbage.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:
Severe cases of hypokalaemia (<2.5 mEq/L): 4 to 8 mEq (2 to 4 tablets) every 24 hours in two divided doses with food. Continue the administration until the hypokalaemia resolves.
Constant monitoring of serum potassium levels is necessary.
The dosage may be adjusted to meet the patient's requirements, particularly where used as a long term supplement.
