How Prescription Ordering Works

Prescription (Schedule 4) veterinary medicines can only be supplied with a valid written prescription from a veterinarian. In Australia, a prescription lasts a maximum of 12 months from the date it is written. S4D medicines (Schedule 4, Appendix D) have stricter rules: the prescription expires after 6 months, and the hard copy must be received before the medicine can be dispensed.

To order a prescription medicine, customers choose the medicine, strength and pack size that match their prescription, then send the prescription to The Animal Pharmacy. The steps for sending a prescription are on the How to Order page. Pet pharmacies in Australia cannot currently dispense from electronic prescriptions in the way human pharmacies can.

Australian law restricts the advertising of prescription medicines. For that reason, prescription product pages show limited information, such as no packaging photos and no usage indications. Customers can phone or email the pharmacy with questions about a medicine.

Shipping & Delivery

  • Ships to all states and territories of Australia via Australia Post. Every parcel is tracked. No international shipping.
  • Free Express Shipping on orders over $150 that weigh under 500g. Orders under $150 and under 500g ship for a flat $8.95. Larger orders are quoted by weight and distance at checkout.
  • Refrigerated (cold chain) items ship by Express Post in insulated packaging with ice bricks. They ship Monday to Wednesday only, within the Express Post network.
  • Orders are usually dispatched within 1–2 business days, and medications are prioritised.
  • Local pick-up is available from the North Ryde pharmacy for Sydney customers.

Returns & Refunds

  • Defective or not-as-expected products can be reviewed for a refund or store credit.
  • The customer must contact The Animal Pharmacy within 14 days of delivery to get a return number.
  • Prescription medicines cannot be returned or refunded once dispensed and dispatched, because Australian law does not allow them to be resold.
  • Perishable items (food, treats), products that must be stored under 25°C, and sale or non-returnable items are also excluded.
